DFXP CAPTION FILES

DFXP CAPTION FILES FOR YOUR VIDEOS

>> Metro Captions is an industry leader in providing DFXP caption files!

Captioning videos can be confusing and time consuming if you’re not familiar with the process. If you happened upon this page because you’re searching for a DFXP caption file provider, you’ve found us! Here at Metro Captions, we’re known throughout our industry as a leading closed captioning provider, including our work on DFXP caption files.

Otherwise known as Distribution Format Exchange Profile files, DFXP caption files are very popular when it comes to Adobe Flash and Silverlight video players and platforms such as Brightcove. They are considered a standard type of captioning file and are associated with Timed Text Markup Language (TTML). Netflix is one company that accepts caption files in DFXP format. So if you’re looking for DFXP caption files for your Netflix video, we’re here to help!

This being said, you may be wondering why you should always caption your videos. Well, when closed captioning is turned on, online videos and TV shows become accessible to everyone – including the deaf and hearing impaired. Making videos accessible for these groups and for users who aren’t fluent in the language of the video will widely broaden your potential audience. And most importantly, in many countries like the U.S., there are laws associated with providing closed captioning to viewers.

How do you know if you need captions or subtitles?!

Due to their different contexts and purposes, captions and subtitles are characterized by a few important differences. Subtitles, as the name suggests, are usually placed at the bottom of the screen. Captions on the other hand, may be placed in different locations on the screen in order to make clear to the audience who is speaking. This is especially useful for deaf individuals who can’t rely on voice distinctions to pinpoint the speaker.

Subtitles and captions have some of the same hurdles to overcome, such as the vocabulary and reading skills of the program’s target audience. For example, both the subtitles for a children’s movie and the captions for a children’s television program need to consider the viewer’s reading time. Since most children don’t read as quickly as adults, this may mean using age-appropriate synonyms and shorter words.

Cultural localization must also be factored in. The UK subtitles for a French film might use the words “lift” (“elevator”) or “lorry” (“truck”) — words which may need to be altered for American audiences.
